No webmasters In dubai ?

September28

The whole idea of getting my self this site started 3 years back. I had some friends who were interested in doing all this, they were creative and really talented. Well, but back in school days we had a lot of stuffs to take care of, So our website plan never really came to life.

I started this site . It was my first time. It seems like I always have to learn the hard way but well I learn that is what matters in the end. In the whole process, I came to know the whole thing was way bigger than it seemed. I got to know a lot of webmasters around the world. I also came across people who used to blog from dubai. They were really in ‘there’ just for the fun of it.

Let me confess, I haven’t come across even one webmaster from dubai who is into making websites for the money aspect of it. Looks like no one is into internet marketing on a big scale here.  Come on dubai, there is a lot of money to be made online !

I have tried getting few of my friends into the whole business but seems like they are just too ‘lazy’. Well, its good for me in a way. Lesser the number of webmasters , lesser the competition for me.

If you are in dubai and are interested to make money online , I might be interested in tutoring you.

Relevant VS High PR backlinks !

August21

This is a question that every one has a different opinion about . Some swear by high pr back links while the others prefer a low pr but highly relevant backlinks. I was kind of curious my self . So I decided to go explore my self .

I decided to build only relevant backlinks for my latest website project . I was building links from all relevant forums and blogs and adding content on a regular basis too. The strategy worked wonders and I was ranking for some really competitive keywords within a week . I guess that speaks its all .

I decided to take my investigation further , I posted a thread on one of the most popular webmaster forums to know other fellow marketers opinion on the same . I got some interesting replies

Having backlinks from un-related sites isn’t going to harm you but it will be a lot harder and most time won’t look natural to get a backlink for a Used Cars website in a Gucci Handbags blog. Also you have to consider that backlinks can generate valuable traffic so it is always recommended to stick to your niche.

Building links in PR0 domains won’t harm you but it won’t help you as much as a higher PR site.

So both things are half true. It will always be easier to get back links from related websites but it won’t harm you if you don’t. You should always take into consideration PR not because of the green bar in the google toolbar but because usually those sites give a more reputable and heavier link “power” to you.

Think of links as a votes: would you rather buy a car recommended by 10 friends that don’t have a driving license or buy a car that is recommended by 3 mechanics? If all 13 (related and un-related sites) vote/link for that car than it is a sure purchase, if only 10 friends without a license (un-related sites) recommend that car you should consider it but ask for a second opinion, if 3 mechanics (related and high PR sites) tell you to buy a car it is 99.9% a sure purchase. The search engines pretty much “think” the same way

Links from high PR sites that are not relevant and do not have the keywords you want to rank for as the link text will NOT help your URL’s rankings… All they do is pass your page PR. And PR has almost no effect on rankings since it is only a minor ranking factor and only 1 of 200+ such factors. Other things like the link text of inbound links and the relevance of the page linking to your URL carry far more weight. The <title> and <h1> of the page itself probably carries more weight than the URL’s own PR.

IMO the following three attributes of a link are the most important and are listed in the order of importance with regard to Google rankings…

link text contains targeted keyword phrase > links from relevant page > links from high PR page
In other words, I think Google “rates” links from best to worst as follows:

EXCELLENT: link text contains targeted keyword phrase PLUS link is from relevant page PLUS link is from high PR page
VERY GOOD: link text contains targeted keyword phrase PLUS link is from relevant page (not from high PR page)
GOOD: link text contains targeted keyword phrase PLUS link is from high PR page (not from relevant page)
FAIR: link text contains targeted keyword phrase only (not from relevant page / not from high PR page)
POOR: link is from relevant page PLUS link is from high PR page (link text does NOT contain targeted keyword phrase)
VERY POOR: link is from relevant page only (link text does NOT contain targeted keyword phrase and not from high PR page)
WORST: link is from high PR page only (link text does NOT contain targeted keyword phrase and not from relevant page)

The above handles every combination of the 3 important attributes of an inbound link. Links rated POOR and lower likely have very little if any influence on your URL’s ranking for a given keyword phrase.

PS: By link text contains targeted keyword phrase I mean either the targeted keyword phrase or some variation of that keyword phrase… some link text that would lead Google to believe that the page

So let me put it all in a nut shell . The main focus should be getting quality relevant links because it helps your site look more natural and also passes some targeted traffic to your site with the key word as anchor text . At the same time , Irrelevant high PR backlinks can also do some good for your rankings with the keyword as anchor text . PR 0 irrelevant backlinks wont really do any good , but wont harm you either .

Blogulution : Finally !

August7

This blog was started by an ultimate Noob , who didn’t know shit about websites.  I remember Bugging the Live chat support at hostgator  to tell me where and how could I install a blog on my site . ( believe that ? ) . I made this site without doing any keyword research ,  in fact I didn’t even know what keyword research was when I made this site . I have come a far way from that . Now I know how stuff work and how can they be manipulated . I have a network of 4-5 sites now . I wouldn’t say I am doing good , But I am working on some really promising projects .

I ‘ve decided I am going to expand my horizons a bit now . I am going to talk about everything I love here .  I guess I will mostly be rambling in and around Dubai and Internet marketing .  I will try updating the site thrice at least in a week .

I guess Its high time , I do some thing useful with this baby of mine .  I need to fix the entry page , its pr 2 and its just an image  which is not really every appealing .  I will be moving this site from my onshore host to hostgator soon  . I think I will stick with the same skin . I like it !

Check back soon . There will be a lot to see and read 🙂

No more ‘ Cheap Hosts ‘ !

August5

History repeats it self . Cheap hosts can only get you in lot of trouble and are totally unreliable . After the previous incident that left my site down for over a month , I played cautious and kept 2 hosting accounts . One onshore , One offshore.

The onshore account ( Where this site is hosted ) is kind of gay. I have never heard from the support group what so ever. Submitted tickets but no reply whatsoever. The issues were nothing major ( fortunately ) . The up time has been pretty good though. I bought it for 5$ for 6 months .  Not bad for what I paid .

Here is where its get tricky. Because of zero support from my onshore host I decided to buy another hosting . The offer was , I could get an offshore reseller account for 10 $ / year plus IM support . I was like cool , I ll take it . I was getting an offshore reseller account for the same amount of an onshore shared package. I bought it .

The guy was a pakistani , He seemed to be a nice guy . We soon became good friends . The problem was Paypal does not support Pakistan and like you know  paypal is the most popular payment method on the net. He had his account limited over 5 times and total funds of around 500 $ were freezed .

He had problems paying for the server fees , I helped him financially once too.  When I thought It was all fine ,  He sent an email saying he sold the company  ( here comes the twist )  for 150 $ via western Union . I was kind of upset because this guy was a good friend . All of a sudden I stopped seeing him online on MSN ( I should’ve understood then… ) .After 2 weeks , I was not able to sign in my cpanel , it said my license expired ( I should’ve understood then too ) . I was like , fine it should be fixed soon . 2 days after that , Boom , Server down .

So lets break it down . He first tells he sold the company , that means he is no longer responsible . Cpanel License expired , He doesn’t care any more . Server boom down indicates he ran away . So basically i got Pawned big time .

I had no major backup of my files and I had one of my major projects on that server plus my friend’s site . I don’t know what I am going to tell her ( Yes , a female , that is where it even gets more complicated ).

I have to get my site together soon or my SERPS are gonna get fucked . I am switching my hosting completely now , all my sites will be hosted on my new hostgator account . They are reliable and have top notch support. But they are strict with their policies and shit . But come on , Its fine .

Moral of the story

  • Be vigilant
  • Always go for quality hosting
  • Keep a hosting account in spare
  • Keep regular backups
  • Trust no one

PS : Its a very webmaster-ish post . Don’t feel stupid if you don’t get stuff .

Getting Stuck at Ghubaiba Station

July31

Imagine this ! You have no money and you are stuck on the dubai bus stop and you have to make your way back home to sharjah. Trust me , Its not really as adventurous and exciting as it sounds .

Me and my 3 friends were on the way back from a picnic , we reached the bus stop and figured out we were 3 dirhams short on our 4th ticket . ( TIP : Keep your travel money safe and seperate rite from the start ).

We though of going and asking some one for cash , but our ego was just a little too much to ask any one for cash . We were wondering what to do . I decided to call a friend of mine and ask him to drop in 3 bucks ( that was embrassing , but I had to do it ) . He was cool about it but he told it would be 30 minutes before he could make it. We were like OK , I was ready to wait . Rather late then never . . I had no intentions of sleeping on the bus stop for the night or calling up my dad and asking him to come pick me up . The consequences would be dangerous .

We thought of a plan in the meanwhile  . We sent the most little member of our friends 15 year old to the main cabin and asked him to pretend as if he lost his wallet and had to make his way to sharjah and make a cute little cuddly face in distress . He did it and it worked .  The generous arab gave him 5 bucks , he bought a ticket and boarded the bus. We boarded the next bus and went home .

It happened for the first time to me , I hope it happens never again though .

Moral of the story : Keep your travel money safe no matter what !
